Why are wisdom teeth removed?
Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come in, usually in the late teens or early twenties. Many mouths don’t have room for them, so they can become impacted (stuck under the gum), grow in at an angle, crowd neighboring teeth, or trap food and bacteria. Removing them prevents pain, infection, and damage to the teeth around them.
Signs your wisdom teeth may need to come out
- Aching or pressure at the back of the mouth
- Swollen, tender, or red gums behind your molars
- Jaw stiffness or difficulty opening wide
- Bad taste or persistent bad breath near the area
- Crowding or shifting of nearby teeth
What to expect during the procedure
We start with an X-ray to see the position of each tooth and its roots. The area is fully numbed for your comfort, and we gently remove the tooth. Simple extractions are quick; impacted teeth take a little more time. We’ll discuss comfort options with you beforehand so you know exactly what to expect.
Recovery and aftercare
Most people recover in a few days. We’ll send you home with simple instructions — rest, cold compresses, soft foods, and how to keep the area clean. Following them closely helps you heal comfortably and avoid complications like dry socket.
