Why retainers matter
Teeth naturally tend to drift back toward their original position after orthodontic treatment. A retainer holds them in place while the surrounding bone and gums settle, protecting the results you worked hard for. Wearing your retainer as directed is the single best way to keep your smile straight for life.
Types of retainers
- Clear retainers — nearly invisible and custom-molded to your teeth.
- Hawley retainers — a durable, adjustable design with a thin wire.
- Fixed (bonded) retainers — a thin wire bonded behind the teeth for around-the-clock retention.
Lost or broken your retainer?
Don’t wait — teeth can shift within days without one. We can make a replacement retainer from a new impression of your teeth so you don’t lose progress. If your old retainer no longer fits, that’s a sign your teeth may already be moving, so come in soon.
Caring for your retainer
Rinse it after wearing, clean it gently (never with hot water, which can warp it), and store it in its case — not a napkin, where it’s easily thrown away. We’ll go over the wear schedule that’s right for you.
