If you have Medi-Cal, you have dental coverage. That surprises a lot of people in Yuba City, CA 95991 — and even more are surprised by how hard it can be to find an office that actually takes it. Yuba City Dental Arts does. This guide walks you through the whole thing in plain steps: how to confirm you are covered, how to book, what to bring, and what happens at the first visit, so you can stop putting off the toothache or the checkup you have been meaning to get to.
First: Medi-Cal, Denti-Cal, Medi-Cal Dental — same thing?
Yes. Denti-Cal is the old name for the dental part of Medi-Cal. The state now calls it Medi-Cal Dental, but dentists, patients and the ID cards still say Denti-Cal, and they all mean the same coverage. If you are enrolled in Medi-Cal, your dental benefit is included automatically; there is no separate dental plan to sign up for in Sutter County.
Step 1: Check that your Medi-Cal is active
Your coverage has to be active in the month you visit. The quickest checks: your Medi-Cal Benefits Identification Card (BIC) — the plastic card with the poppy on it — and a recent eligibility letter from Sutter County Health & Human Services. If you are not sure, call the Medi-Cal Dental line at 1-800-322-6384 or ask us: we can run an eligibility check with your BIC number and date of birth before you come in.
Not enrolled yet? Since 2024 Medi-Cal is open to all income-eligible California adults regardless of immigration status. You can apply through the DHCS Medi-Cal page, at the Sutter County HHS office in Yuba City, or through Covered California. Dental coverage starts with the medical coverage.
Step 2: Find an office that takes it
This is the step where people get stuck. Many offices in the Yuba-Sutter area do not accept Medi-Cal, and the state’s online provider list is not always current. Two reliable routes:
- Call the office and ask two questions: “Do you accept Medi-Cal Dental?” and “Are you taking new Medi-Cal patients right now?” Both matter — some offices accept it but are full.
- Use the state’s search at SmileCalifornia.org, then confirm by phone.
At Yuba City Dental Arts the answer to both questions is yes: we accept Medi-Cal / Denti-Cal for adults and children, and we are taking new patients at 887 Plumas St #B.
Step 3: Book, and tell us it is Medi-Cal
When you call or request an appointment online, say you are a Medi-Cal patient and give us your BIC number. That lets us verify your eligibility before the visit, check whether you have a monthly “share of cost”, and confirm which services are covered for you this year. You will not be surprised at the front desk.
Step 4: What to bring
- Your Medi-Cal BIC card (or the number)
- A photo ID
- A list of medications you take
- For a child: the child’s BIC card and a parent or guardian to sign consent
We cover this in more detail in new to Medi-Cal dental? What to bring to your first visit.
Step 5: The first visit
A first visit is an exam, the X-rays you need, and usually a cleaning the same day if your benefits allow it. Dr. Navjot Singh goes through what he finds, tells you what is covered by Medi-Cal and what (if anything) is not, and you decide what to do next. Nothing is done that you have not agreed to. For most Medi-Cal members, covered services have no copay; if you have a share of cost, we explain it before treatment.
What is covered for adults — exams, cleanings, fillings, root canals, crowns, extractions, dentures and more — is laid out in what Denti-Cal covers for adults.
Why we take Medi-Cal when many offices do not
Because the people who need dental care most are often the ones who cannot find it. Dr. Singh opened Yuba City Dental Arts to be a full-service family office — checkups, fillings, crowns, dentures, emergencies — that treats Medi-Cal patients the same as anyone else, in the same chairs, with the same materials. Benefits change, and every member’s situation is a little different, so we verify your Medi-Cal dental coverage before your visit and tell you exactly what is covered before any treatment starts.
